The Riviera Maya welcomes whale sharks this May

The biggest fish on earth are yet again returning to the Riviera Maya, where they come every year, between May 17 and September 18.

These giant but gentle sea creatures choose Riviera Maya as their temporary feeding ground. Whale sharks are completely not harmful to human beings, and feed on plankton. Opening their gigantic mouths, these creatures scoop up tiny plants together with any small fish that might come along.

They can open their mouths about five feet wide – once they do, you will see three rows of hundreds of tiny teeth. Whale sharks can reach more than 40 feet in length and their weight starts at around 47,000 pounds.

Riviera Maya’s warm water is a natural habitat for whale sharks, where they can be spotted in the area between two islands: Isla Mujeres and Holbox

There are multiple local tours that you can take to snorkel or dive with whale sharks in the Riviera Maya:

Whale sharks are very docile and gentle, and do not get alarmed when approached by divers or swimmers.

Their flattened head has a blunt snout above its mouth. Its back and sides are gray to brown with white spots among pale vertical and horizontal stripes. Its belly is white. Even without knowing these features, you can be sure you won’t be mistaken when you see a whale shark approaching! Swim along and admire the world’s biggest fish!
