The summer continues in the Riviera Maya with events, festivals and fun in the sun

Day of the Dead in the Riviera Maya

The weather is starting to cool down, but your summer doesn’t have to end! Unpack your summer shorts and bathing suits from the bottom of the closet, get a new sunscreen, and head to the Riviera Maya, the land of the eternal summer.

This is the time for best airfare and hotel bargains, before the high season starts in December. It’s also the perfect time to celebrate authentic Mexican holidays with the locals – such as Day of the Dead - or one of the festivals and events taking place this fall.

Here is our top list:

TULUM SEA TURTLE FESTIVAL, October 16 to 18. Initiated with the idea to protect the turtles of Tulum, this festival celebrates the conservation of sea turtles. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to learn about sea turtles – there are contests for children, events and beach cleanings.

DAY OF THE DEAD. Celebrated at the time of American Halloween (November 1 – 2), Mexican Day of the Dead is a completely different, unique holiday. Called Hanal Pixán in Mayan, the feast includes music, dancing, arts, traditional food and spiritual ceremonies. For re-enactment of the traditional celebrations, you can visit Xcaret park, or simply hang out with locals on Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue, where a parade will take place. Traditionally, Mexicans believe that this is the magic night when their dead relatives come to celebrate with them, and it’s common to leave food and drinks for them on the graves. In general, this is a feast, a celebration, a joyous occasion to once again reunite with the loved ones.

RIVIERA MAYA JAZZ FESTIVAL. Listen to international jazz stars perform live at a free event on the beach in Playa del Carmen, while you gaze at the sky and enjoy the gentle sea breeze. The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival is marking its 12th year this November. It’s taking place on November 26 – 28, which is the perfect time to escape the ever-cooling climate of the countries up north. The impressive cast includes: Gino Vannelli, Zawinul Legacy Band, Tio Gus, T’Orus, Zappa Plays Zappa, Dirty Loops, Phil Perry, Guacamole, Sheila E., Allan Holdsworth, Resorte, and Gabriel Espinosa/ Hendrik Meurkens.

PGA MAYAKOBA GOLF CLASSIC, November 9-15. OHL Classic at Mayakoba is one of the finest PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) tours, with plenty of opportunities to participate and watch some great players. This year, there will be 132 golfers participating at the event.
