We have written about best restaurants in Tulum, but this post is dedicated only to the restaurants located in the village, or pueblo, of Tulum - that is, mostly where locals eat. You should, too, if you want to try delicious Mexican (and international!) food for a very local price.

Tulum town, or Tulum pueblo as it's called by the locals, has developed in the recent years from an unknown Mexican village dotted only by a few backpackers to a town with a strong international community.

You can see the town grow almost every day. There is always something new going on in the pueblo. A new restaurant opens its doors, a new fashion shop, a hotel or bar put a sign up, a new street develops...

Yes, you are enjoying the gorgeous beaches, beach clubs and jungle-side restaurants of Tulum, and that is perfectly wonderful way to spend your time. But why don't you venture to the village one night for a local fare at one of the small, delicious, affordable restaurants? Say hello to some locals, have a margarita and enjoy the best tacos you have ever tried.

 

Here is our list of the best restaurants in Tulum, all located in town:

 

BACARO. Get ready to stand in line for a table at this new fusion restaurant with a meat grill, oven-baked Italian pizza and most delicious salads.

 

CAFÉ - TULUM ART CLUB. It's a Tulum art club-coffee shop that has artwork by local artists hanging on its walls, and serves a variety of coffee-based drinks and healthy smoothies, as well as Mexican dishes and pastries. Great place for a coffee, breakfast or lunch.

 

DEL CIELO. Go where locals meet for breakfast or lunch. Organic juices, green smoothies, fresh roasted coffee, pastries, eggs, avocado sandwiches...Enjoy! Might have to wait for a table, but it's worth it.

 

CO.CONAMOR RESTAURANTE. A new health-conscious restaurant in the village. Offers healthy food made from natural products. Eco-conscious food and smoothies, with a shop selling organic spices, herbs and beauty products. Rustic setting in a backyard with a garden.

 

DALLA NONNA. Taste homemade Italian cooking at this restaurant run by a real Italian grandmother! Best fresh pastas and Italian wine for a romantic evening.

 

LA PARRILLADA TULUM. First quality meat, great choice, a bit hidden from the main avenue. It’s worth to spend time to find it. Perfect for meat lovers, but vegetarians will also enjoy it. Affordable price considering high food quality. 

 

EL ASADERO. Delicious meat tacos are served at this restaurant, which is always full of locals. Also try cactus salad.

 

GINGER. Ginger gives you an opportunity to meet some locals while trying an exotic menu, fresh fish and delicious martinis, served amongst red walls.

 

IL BOCCONCINO. An authentic Italian restaurant, Il Bocconcino has been praised by local Italians and tourists as one of the best Italian restaurants in the village. Excellent fresh fish, lobster, past and deserts. 

 

LOS AGUACHILES. Trying to find an authentic Mexican experience during lunch? Head the Los Aguachiles for delicious fish tacos and ceviches. Order a michelada (Mexican beer, served on ice with a special spicy sauce) to go with your fish tacos. Great for a laid-back local lunch.

 

LA MALQUIERIDA. Perfect combination of service and great food, easy to find, and offers big servings of typical Mexican food and delicious margaritas. Serves fresh seafood and other typical local Mexican dishes, such as chilles rellenos, tacos and some of the best ceviche around. Great value.

 

LA COQUETA. Tasty, authentic Mexican food with friendly and accommodating service, in a small, cute restaurant with mostly outside seating. Located to the left and across the street of San Francisco supermarket. Great value.

 

ANTOJITOS LA CHIAPANECA. Simple place, and typical local food for a local price. Some say it's the best tacos al pastor in town!

 

FLOW at HARMONY HOTEL. Amazing humus, falafel, guacamole, vegetarian burgers, salads and fresh juices. 

 

TAQUERIA HONORIO. Simply the best cochinita pibil in town (an old Mayan recipe: slowly roasted suckling pig, used for tacos), delicious tacos, really great value.

 

CELTI. Hidden gem & delicius authentic Mexican food. Great vegetarian menu also. Romantic, candle lit and friendly. Reservation recommended.

 

LA BARRACUDA TULUM.  Nice local fresh fish restaurant, authentic regional recipes. Great value for money. Don't forget to try the fish soup and ceviche!

 

TRATTORIA ROMANA. Would you like a taste of Rome in Tulum? Then you should visit this cute Italian restaurant, run by Italians, and frequented by all local Italians (and there are many). You will have fresh pasta, fresh fish, real Italian mozzarella and olive oil straight from Italy.

 

LONCHERIA EL AGUACATE.  Completely unpretentious local restaurant with delicious Mexican food at a really amazing value. Big menu, fresh juices and delicious coffee.

 

BURRITO AMOR. Looking for a tasty, hearty lunch? Even though burrito is not from these parts of Mexico - it is a north-Mexican dish - but this is a great place for lunch or a simple tasty dinner, complete with rich Mexican flavors! The menu includes 6 salads: some vegetarian, some with fish or meat and 12 different kinds of burritos. Wash it all down with homemade lemonade or fruit water with Chaya (local plant, similar to spinach, but even richer in nutrients).

 

BATEY MOJITO & GUARAPA BAR. If you want to have a lighter snack, live music and the most delicious mojito you have ever tried, head straight to Batey Mojito & Guarapa Bar, located in the village of Tulum for an unforgettable experience.
