Sian Ka’an means “where the sky is born.”

Lagoon of Sian Ka'an

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one a few places in the world with such magic, mesmerizing ambiance. In Sian Ka’an humans and nature become one, where the sky meets the azure waters of a lagoon, which flows into the turquoise Caribbean Sea, surrounding you with majestic natural beauty. Composed of coral reef, wetlands with mangrove canals and savannahs, this unique tropical eco-system will bring you in the embrace of nature in its purest form.

So what to do in Sian Ka’an? Away from civilization and deep in the tropical jungle, only in the company of local inhabitants – birds, turtles, dolphins, fish – you can float down a river stream, take a boat tour around the lagoon, bird watch, fly fish or simply get away from it all by renting a cabin that faces the blue sea and the white sand beach. If you ever come to the Mexican Caribbean coast – the Riviera Maya – you must include Tulum and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve into your itinerary.

Tulum has long been known for some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, relaxed vibe, and eco-chic atmosphere that draws sophisticated clientele in search of rejuvenation, and an almost spiritual contact with stunning nature.

Where Tulum’s romantic beach zone ends, Sian Ka’an begins. It’s a vast protected nature enclave and UNESCO World Heritage Site of natural beauty, home to many species of birds, animals and plants – a true testimony to biodiversity of Mexico. Sian Ka’an is an important nesting site to some endangered sea turtle species, home to two endangered kinds of crocodile and many other protected species. Scattered with Mayan archaeological sites throughout, Sian Ka’an is also home to Mayan communities who organize tours and show you the hidden secrets of their paradise.

We made a list about how to get the best out of Sian Ka’an. There are many ways to enjoy it, and you can choose your perfect tour or activity.

1. Tours from Muyil with local Mayan guides.

Early in the morning, go to Muyil town, 10 minutes away from Tulum, and take a boat tour with a local guide, crossing the lagoons and admiring the sea side of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. It is hard to believe what you see, when your eyes are lost in the clouds, in the water and the sky. For a complete relaxation and fun experience, jump into a fresh water canal with a strong current and shallow water, which will make you float all the way to the lagoon. Hike through the jungle with a local guide and admire ancient Mayan archaeological sites of Muyil.

2. Punta Allen adventure.

During dry season, you can take your own car (four-wheel drive car suggested) to the entrance of Sian Ka’an, just where Tulum’s beach zone ends, and venture through the dirt road all the way to Punta Allen, the largest fisherman village in Sian Ka’an.

The trip will take about two hours and you will experience many road bumps, but the destination is really worth it! At Punta Allen you can take a boat tour around the lagoon and see many birds, turtles and dolphins. It’s also a good spot for an amazing sunset tour. Back in town, you can enjoy a fresh fish lunch while relaxing in the laid-back atmosphere of a tropical jungle village.
